Police worried over robberies

FOUR PEOPLE HAVE been shot in the last 18 days in robberies and attempted robberies which police suspect are linked to the cash for gold business.

The increase in these violent incidents has prompted police to urge Barbadians to be conservative about the wearing of jewellery, or not wear any at all.

“We are seeing an increase in the use of violence in regards to robbery and theft,” said Inspector David Welch yesterday.

He said that from reports it seemed the perpetrators were becoming more aggressive, and their main targets were jewellery, cellphones and money. (SP)

Posted by c holder 4 months ago: Stop the cash for gold business! The buyers cannot prove the source of the jewelry no matter what they do.
It won't stop all crimes but it will stop that element.

Posted by dirty okra 4 months ago: So now you shouldn't wear jewellry? How about more police presence all around the island in general. How about severe penalties for these theives? To tell the public not to wear jewellry is like telling someone don't be proud of your success and accomplishments, be afraid to make money because some thug is going to take it from you. Government needs to curb the influx of guns into the island. I'd like to know how they can do that when their own port workers are the ones bringing in the guns.

If more thieves break into your house and your possessions are we to stop buying anything just to please this culprits or we add more police for the increasing crime to protect law abiding citizens who pay their fair share of taxes.

Posted by Kenneth King 4 months ago: I wanted to add this although many may not agree, the police wants us not to carry any jewelry around, therefore my argument is for the last few years many officers were arguing about the promotion of members and even took the commissioner to a challenge of his issuing of giving out these promotions. What if we have a situation of more inspectors and other high ranking officers than normal constables in the force. No inspector or Sergeant will love to be seen direction traffic or village walks, we need answers as to what is happening to our proud police service; if there is not enough money then we need to cut the amount of politicians sitting in Parliament earning thousands of dollars each year that can add 20 or 30 more police members two our growing population.
