Robbery fright

CHERYL THORNE, mother of the victim, was distraught at the news that her only child was the target of a botched armed robbery yesterday.

A DISTRAUGHT MOTHER is thanking her lucky stars that her only child is alive and well following a botched armed robbery just after midday yesterday at CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank on Fontabelle.

Cheryl Thorne, who works at the Esso gas station at Holborn, was still at work when the DAILY NATION visited her yesterday. She said her son was “a little shaken but okay”.

“He came back here after he went to the doctor and he is now at the police station giving a statement.”

A soft-spoken Thorne said her son, who also works at the gas station, was depositing cash at the branch, as he did every day.

Sometimes the public's desire for the news and news organizations insatiable desire to deliver, puts in harms way the very victims we hope to safeguard. After reading the article entitled, "Robbery Fright," featuring a woman whose only son was spared possible death on his job, I found myself experiencing mixed emotions. At first I was quite elated to read that her son and his colleagues were unharmed; however, after further reading, I became disgusted at the amount of personal information that was released to the public about woman and her son. Not only did we learn that her son works for which bank and its location, we were also informed that he also works at his mother's place of business - it's name and location also revealed. Furthermore, we learned that her son daily delivers the deposit from the gas station to his bank. Now the first attempt by the robbers was botched, but now they robbers, with the help of a distinguished news organization, have been given ammunition for a second attempt and only God knows the outcome this time. I am ardent supporter and a vigorous defender of free speech and a free press, but sometimes the press gives me cause to wonder about the common sense of those who publish such as I have described. For what purpose was it ever necessary to divulge this personal information? For whose benefit was it published? Is the public or the victims of such a cowardly act better for it?

My hope is that the press becomes more cognizant of their responsibility to the citizens of Barbados, and that they discharge that responsibilty sensibly and with utmost integrity.

This gas station seems to conduct it's banking (deposit) in a very primitive way. Thank God that the young man was not hurt.

Instead of out Harassing Young Attorneys/Lawyers,they (RBPF) should/could have been Going around to Businesses like these teaching them about the value of changing their Daily ROUTINE. [See Quote"A soft-spoken Thorne said her son, who also works at the gas station, was depositing cash at the branch, as he did every day."]
Its pretty obvious that someone else was watching that ROUTINE for an Opportunity to strike, thank God that the attacker was not really that desperate to use his weapon or it could have ended differently.

@Vascol Thomas!!! You are way off base why are you shooting the messenger, dont you think/believe that the attacker already knew all of that information,or do you think this was all a random act of opportunity, It is the fault of the business for have the same ROUTINE EVERY DAY, that was a robbery looking to happen, and the lack of success was because obviously the Robber was an amateur, he did not expect resistance. he probably thought that the sight of the weapon would have terrorized the Depositor. What you should be doing is INSTRUCTING the PROPRIETOR to CHANGE THE DEPOSIT ROUTINE, or have someone accompany the Depositor to the Bank, not critisizing the newspaper for publishing the FACTS
