Expect to see Immigration officers at the two ports of entry in gloves and masks in a counter-attack to the deadly Ebola threat.

After a lengthy meeting at the Grantley Adams International Airport earlier this week, health and union officials will move on to the Bridgetown Port next Thursday as they map out a response to the Ebola epidemic now affecting West Africa but with cases popping up in the United States, Spain, Norway, France, Britain and Germany.

The protective items are part of protocols discussed for frontline workers at the ports of entry against the threat of the fatal Ebola virus, following the airport meeting last Tuesday between the top brass of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), Chief Medical Officer Dr Joy St John and officers from the Customs and Immigration departments.

The meetings come on the heels of complaints from the border workers about possible exposure to the deadly virus when processing suspected Ebola patients because of a lack of proper gear.

Acting general secretary of the NUPW, Rosalyn Smith, told the SATURDAY SUN it was agreed that representatives from the frontline are supposed to be a part of the team which will be responsible for determining the protocols to be put in place at the two borders. (YB)
