A member of the National Council of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) believes union boss Dennis Clarke owes the entire membership an apology.
Danny Gill, who has sat on the union’s decision-making council for more than four years, is challenging general secretary Clarke after the lead story in Thursday’s WEEKEND NATION quoted him as saying support from appointed workers was lacking during recent industrial relations challenges.
In that article, Clarke said the jobs of the 3 000 temporary workers might have been saved if the appointed workers were in solidarity with their colleagues.
He was quoted as saying: “Those workers who have a job and are appointed are not prepared to go out there and show some sort of opposition to what is happening. A lot them said they had mortgages and other bills to pay and that has been the position of a lot of members that we asked about taking some form of action.” (AC)
