Seek advice, Bajans warned

With Chikungunya cases on the rise, more Barbadians are opting not to go to their doctors but are self-diagnosing and medicating themselves.

But pharmacists are cautioning that in these cases, those who are exhibiting symptoms should still seek their advice on what they should be taking.

One pharmacist said he was constantly receiving calls daily from people who were experiencing symptoms associated with chikungunya.

“They call explaining what their symptoms are and they are asking what they should take,” he said.

​Another pharmacist said one of the reasons the confirmed cases of chikungunya are so low is because people are self-diagnosing at home.

He said that in these instances it was important that people coming down with the symptoms were not “overdosing” on medication.
