Barbados’ newest centenarian Seibert Nathaniel Cumberbatch was never one to spare the rod and spoil the child.
And yesterday, as he celebrated his milestone, Cumberbatch was thanked by some of his 12 living children (of 15) for being a strict disciplinarian.
“He was completely involved in teaching discipline and exercising punctuality and made sure that you went to school and in general made sure that his kids stayed out of trouble, which was very important,” son Delbert Cumberbatch said.
The centenarian was feted at the J & J’s Senior Citizens Home at Gibbons Terrace, Christ Church, where he resides.
The former labourer, who toiled in the fields of Rock Hall, St Andrew, where he was raised, received a visit from Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave.
Cumberbatch has 24 grandchildren and ten great-grands.
Officials at the home said that the centenarian needed “total care” but was “very pleasant and no trouble to take care of”.
Sir Elliott noted that yesterday was one year since he assumed his duties as Governor General. Cumberbatch was the 23rd centenarian he had visited. (AH)
