Wimbledon champion Serena Williams has undergone emergency surgery following the discovery of a blood clot on her lungs, according to reports.
Her spokesperson said Williams, 29, received treatment for a haematoma on Monday, suffered as a result of a pulmonary embolism.
“Doctors are continuing to monitor her situation closely to avoid additional complications,” read a statement.
Williams has not played competitively since winning Wimbledon in July 2010.
She was unable to compete because of a foot injury, suffered when she cut her foot on glass in a restaurant when celebrating her Wimbledon triumph.
The injury prevented the former world number one from chasing a third successive Australian Open triumph in January this year.
Williams, the current world 11, can count four Wimbledon titles among her 13 Grand Slam victories, making her the sixth most successful Grand Slam player in women’s tennis history. (BBC)
