Just how good is Shamar Rock in the long jump?
He gave spectators another insight at the Austin Sealy Classic over the weekend at the National Stadium.
The Rising Stars CARIFTA Games champion leapt to a personal best of 7.60 metres in the men’s open competition.
Rock has already qualified for the forthcoming World Juniors in Oregon.
His performance also impressed events patron Austin Sealy who was part of the appreciative crowd.
The middle distance competitors also produced performances to keep spectators at the edge of their seats even if the times weren’t fantastic.
Rosette Hoyte beat Shonita Broomes in a nail-biting finish in the Under-18 girls’ 600 metres. Hoyte clocked 1:41:03 and Broomes clocked 1:41:21.
Akelia Knight won the women’s 800 open in a canter in a time of 2:19:15 ahead of Elizabeth Williams 2:26:71  and Akilah Blackman was third in 2:32:64.
In the open men’s 800, Kemar Norgrove of UWI Blackbirds held off a strong challenge from Elite Distance’s Pius Emillien and Joshua Hunte from the BDF. Norgrove took it in 1:59:12.
Samiya Dell of Sharon Primary took the U-9 girls’ 150 metres in a flashback to the Primary School Sports.
The Haddock twins, Jelani and Lelani, won their respective duels in the 200 metres.
Shakera Reece was unchallenged in the women’s 200 metres open.
Other winners included Hosani Lowe and Michael Nicholls in the hurdles.
On the first day, Saturday, Tristan Evelyn had excelled, winning her showdown with Sada Williams over 100 metres but her time of 11.94 seconds was much slower than she ran at the recent CARIFTA Games in Martinique. Williams actually finished fourth, second went to Tameka Rollins, and Sharon Larrier was third.
The unattached Justin Gooding took the men’s 100m in 10.71 seconds from Pacers Joshua Walcott (10.75)and Deon Hope (11.07).
Games organiser Wendy Barrow-Smith fittingly won the women’s discus with a throw of 27.65 metres. (AT)
