Shuffler: Too many rely on Govt

THE LOCAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE president has conceded that too many private sector businesses rely too heavily on the Government.
Tracey Shuffler, president of the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), made the comments as she addressed members during the July luncheon meeting at Hilton Barbados.
“There is a view that the Caribbean private sector relies too heavily on governments in the region to maintain preferential treatment to improve profitability without at the same time putting in the requisite efforts to innovate and develop true competitive advantages outside of the region. While that is a judgment subject to debate, it gives cause for introspection,” she said.
“We have heard from several sources that growth must come through the private sector and I believe most of us are convinced that is true, but again the question is how and from what industries will true growth come?
