KINGSTON – PRIME Minister Portia Simpson Miller will lead the charge tomorrow in her South West St Andrew constituency as the national clean-up effort to rid communities of mosquito breeding sites as part of efforts to control the spread of the chikungunya.

Jamaica House said members of the community will be joined by the prime minister in the Payne Land Division, along Spanish Town Road in clearing the area of debris and possible mosquito breeding sites.

The initiative will get underway at 7 a.m. and embers of the community have been mobilised to participate in the clean-up.

In encouraging the full participation of members of the constituency, Prime Minister Simpson Miller said “it is important that we protect the people of the country, while recognising that everyone has a responsibility to keep their surroundings clean of debris and other material which can serve as potential breeding sites of mosquitoes which carry the chikungunya virus”.

Meanwhile, Barry O’Brien, CEO of Digicel Jamaica, one of the corporate entities supporting the clean-up, said “When the Government asked us to be a part of this clean-up, we jumped at the opportunity to help; we are not only donating money towards the effort but more importantly, Digicel staff will be coming out in force to help people in those communities most in need”.

Among the other agencies participating in tomorrow’s clean-up in the prime minister’s constituency are the Ministry of Local Government, the National Solid Waste Management Agency, the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation, and the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management.
