Professor Sir Hilary Beckles is a leading candidate to become the next vice chancellor of the University of the West Indies, (UWI).
Sir Hilary, principal of the Cave Hill campus for more than a decade, was interviewed last Monday for the position and highly placed sources said he emerged as a “strong” candidate, showing “the maturity” and the “vision” to take over the top position from Professor Nigel Harris, who is due to vacate the job next April after serving for a decade.
“It would be inaccurate to say that Sir Hilary has been selected for the job of vice chancellor, only the council of the University can do that and it hasn’t met for that purpose,” insisted a source, who requested anonymity because he wasn’t authorised to speak on the matter.
“It will take a special meeting of the council to fill the position. However, it would be accurate for the SUNDAY SUN to indicate that Sir Hilary is among the leading candidates for this very important position.”
