DWAYNE SMITH struck it big while no one showed Fidel Edwards the money.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) auction had contrasting results for two of Barbados’ best cricketers this week after Chennai Super Kings picked up Smith for a lucrative US$750 000 (BDS$1.5 million), but his countryman went unsigned following the two-day auction.
Edwards, who has played for both Deccan Chargers and Rajasthan Royals, was just one of three West Indians who appeared in the 2013 edition that did not gain selection for this year’s tournament as Jamaicans Marlon Samuels and Christopher Barnwell also went unsigned.
Smith was rewarded for his tournament-winning performances for Mumbai Indians, although the champs didn’t retain him after buying Krishmar Santokie for US$50 000 and keeping Kieron Pollard.
Jason Holder ($125 000) was picked up by Sun Risers Hyderabad, joining Windies Twenty20 skipper Darren Sammy ($583 000) following his encouraging debut last year for Chennai.
One-Day captain Dwayne Bravo, Chris Gayle and Sunil Narine were all retained by their respective franchises, while Samuel Badree ($50 000), Andre Russell ($100 000), Ravi Rampaul ($150 000) and Kevon Cooper ($50 000) rounded out the list of West Indians to be bought over the two days.
