Soca Royale turns into no contest
Sun, July 25, 2010 - 7:22 PM
The much-hyped Soca Royale battle turned into a puzzling and embarassing no-contest when Sweet Soca Monarch T.C. did not appear on stage for the showdown between herself and Party Monarch Blood.
The strange twist of events unfolded just a few moments ago at the Bushy Park racing circuit, with the result being that Party Monarch Blood won by default.
TC's Sweet Soca win was clearly not popular with the crowd, who booed when she was announced as the winner of the contest around 6:30 pm. The boos became even louder when emcee Mac Fingall made the introductions which was supposed to herald her arrival on stage to perform her winning tune Down the Road.
The band struck up, the back up singers crooned, but TC never appeared.
Fingall soon appeared back on stage to introduce Blood's performance and announce what had become obvious to the thousands at Bushy Park.
Blood attempted to pour oil on the proverbial troubled waters, calling out the various performers in the event to join him on stage in a show of unity. He acknowledged that while the judges' decision may not have been popular, "we do not judge ourselves" and declared his affection for TC, saying:
"She is my friend and she is my Queen."

She definitely did not deserve to win. I think Mr. Dale should have win.

Comment LinkWow! Little did we know it would not be Blood who mash up de whole place! What utter nonsense and unprofessionalism by TC. Now I am left to wonder who is more insane our calypsonians or the NCF (aka Not Calypsonian Friendly No Culture Found; No.1 in Controversial Festivals; etc etc).

Comment LinkWhat was the NCF thinking with this Soca Royale foolishness? TC had the most sense out of all those artistes there. How do you put a party monarch song (fast pace) up against a sweet soca song (slower pace)? It’s like putting the Pic-O-De-Crop winner up against the party monarch winner. FOOLISHNESS.

Although I was not there,TC’s not taking the stage, takes the cake this Festival.
Anymore surprises before kadooment?

Comment LinkTonight I write with a tired body and a very heavy heart. Some of my fellow Barbadian public have both disappointed and disgusted me.
I thought the Bajan people understood and had a love for sweet soca but I was sorely misguided.
Our eyes are wide open, yet we cannot see. We allow frills, favouritism and personal grudges to bond us mentally.
We must put the shoe on the other foot and recognise that the whoe world is having a look.

Comment LinkCompetition is wrong
How can you judge art?
There will always be confusion
It is nonsense and it is doing nothing for the development of our music. It is backward, archaic and an indication of less developed minds.

Comment LinkThe decision that TC had won the sweet soca was not hers but that of the judges. We have been complaining for years about judging and I am only sorry that they weren’t the ones on staged to be booed. TC, I hope you stand firm in this fiasco. I too agree with the masses that someone else should have won, but we can’t blame you. Hopefully this acts as a wake up call to the judges to review their system and listen to the public when it comes to a decision such as sweet soca and party. I also hope that those in charge look at this stupid idea of having sweet soca compete with party at the end of it all. NONSENSE! Two different genres thus two different competitions. Stop being so cheap and destroying our Crop-Over and have two seperate competitions. TC hon be strong. I don’t blame you - I blame the political arena of Crop-Over and those in charge who feel that them know what is best for we without asking we. Good look at the Pic-O-De-Crop hon.

Comment LinkI don’t know what her reasons for not performing at the battle but even though the crowd booed her on winning the sweet soca crown, I think she could have still performed for the satisfaction of the fans that liked her performance.
Maybe this battle thing isn’t a good concept after all. Next time raffle the car to the patrons or something.

Comment LinkThe only way to describe TC’s reaction yesterday was DISGUSTING. For such a seasoned and respected entertainer to carry on in the way that she did is unforgivable and inexcusable. There are many excuses being bandied about for her non-show in the Soca Royale competition but when all is said and done there can be none to satisfy the disrespect shown to the NCF, the sponsors, Blood and the patrons. TC had no problems being adjudged the “People’s Queen” but like a spoilt child spurns it when it is not sympathetic. GROW TO HELL UP TC.

Comment LinkI agree with T.C"s decision not to perform. The Soca Royale is fraught with too many irregularities. Imagine a competition where singers could possibly compete against themselves- nonsense. If Blood had won, then he would be up against himself. The mid-tempo songs have proven that they can hold their own against the faster party songs and should be entered in one competition- call it what you like- but don’t crown two people when only one monarch is really desired. TC would have been asked to perform in a hostile, adversarial environment and that defeats the purpose.

Comment LinkThe judges decision is final - Remember the year when Rita won, it was a similar situation But as people got accustomed to hearing and seeing the performance they realise that she was sweet, sweet, sweet. I heard a woman who is popular on the call in programmes some time ago said that TC win back her crown and she proved right. She knows music - these so call people only look at the popular people. Well done TC, ENJOY!

Comment LinkCongrats to Blood.
TC did not deserve it but she did not judge herself.
There should be ONE party monarch contest from next year.

Comment LinkI am not suprised about any of this! The same thing happened when Heehaw was left out of the 18 for the Pic-o-de-crop Semis. I see nationnews has a poll of who is going to win the crown on Friday..what I want to know is..how can there be a fair winner when one of the best this season is not there to challenge the rest. That is a gross injustice! Who ever wins has not won fair and square! So many people can’t be in disagreement with the judges. Especially those who are distinguished in the field! Even they are appalled! Who do these judges report to anyway! Are they immune from review! This is bare folly!

Comment LinkHow is it that the NCF made the party monarch into two separate shows, one for sweet soca songs and one for the faster party songs but still now they want the two winners of each to face-off, what sense is that? On what criteria will the two winners be judged?
With regards to yesterday’s show: every year they unfair Mr. Dale, he was the rightful winner of the Sweet Soca Competition.

Comment LinkI was not there, therefore I am not qualified to speak on anything. I simply want to suggest that we move towards computerizing the judging process. It should be a cleaner, better, quicker and most transparent way of tabulating results. Nothing for judges to deliberate on and would surely eliminate any accusation.

Comment LinkWell Well…..It is true TC did not judge herself…again the judges in my opinion got it wrong….Now on to the other matter at hand, TC is not the first nor will she be the last to be booed on stage. While the competition was nonsense to begin with, she knew from Day 1 what was required. It was in poor taste in my estimation and an insult to the intelligence of the Bajan public.

Comment LinkWhy is it that in a Party Monarch competition, we are not seeing the truly strong party songs for this year. Stabby as well as Captain Sawyer had very good songs, but yet they selected Popcicle and Queen T with poor songs. Lil Rick has a good song “guh down” yet he did not perform his best song. I feel that there are others who should take some stick for what happened on Sunday.

Comment LinkCongrats TC. All those who say that you don’t deserve to win have never ever written a song far less perform one in front of thousands of people. The decision is final, you are the winner. Hold up your head high and walk with the dignity a queen carries. I am proud of you and so is many other people out there. Critics have a job to do and they are doing it. Thank them and continue strutting your stuff. The crowds may boo as loud as they want to but they cant take away your glory.
To the media I say let the confusion die. It is you who keep it alive. Why all ya like so much controversy I really don’t know.
TC Sis… Wish ya could win the crown Friday night now and mash up de place some more. Keep it up sweetie.
