SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL launched their 50th anniversary celebrations with a luncheon last Sunday at the Plantation Restaurant.
According to club president Fidelis St Hill, the name soroptimist means “best for women” and it is a service club for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world.
“We educate women and girls by increasing their access to the skills necessary to take on any challenge – from basic literacy and numeracy skills to vocational training, to health or sanitation, to climate change, to preparation for running in elections – and in doing so, Soroptimist aim to empower women with confidence and choice, [giving] them the tools necessary to achieve their fullest potential,” St Hill said.
During her address the Soroptimist president appealed to the women attending the luncheon to join the club.
Patrons were entertained by Richard Stoute, Tony Grazette, calypsonian Tiger and others who did not disappoint.
In addition to the food basket that was raffled and won by Jean Callender, a number of door prizes were given away.
MC Admiral Nelson kept the audience well entertained. (RL)
