BARBADOS’ two fiercest cricket rivals Super Centre Spartan and ICBL Empire played out a sensational Sagicor General Twenty20 contest that twice produced ties and had to be decided by which team scored the most fours yesterday.
In the end, Spartan narrowly came out on top, having struck 14 fours to Empire’s 13 after two attempts on the field of play could not separate the teams at Bank Hall.
Spartan, chasing 145 to win, required 14 from the last over and eight from the last two balls.
Marrodon Bend, who finished unbeaten on 68, smashed the penultimate ball for four and tied the match by hitting a three from the final ball to send the teams back to the middle for a super over.
Bend hit all 14 in an over from pacer Lemar Mascoll and Empire matched the score when left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn delivered Spartan’s over, sending the scorers to the books to count the tally of fours (boundaries at the ground are threes and fours).
It was the only match that went down to the wire with the other winners registering comfortable victories.
Champions Sagicor UWI maintained their 100 per cent winning record by easily toppling YMPC by 50 runs at the 3Ws Oval.
UWI’s 153 for six was dominated by Chadwick Walton’s belligerent 74 off 48 balls and the visitors managed 103 for eight in response.
The other matches in Zone A all produced eight-wicket victories for Republic Bank St Catherine, Guardian General Barbados Youth and BFDSP.
St Catherine, helped by a useful all-around performance from Joel Leacock, who took three wickets and scored an unbeaten 24, restricted Ince Transport MTW to 92 but carefully approached the target which was achieved in 18.3 overs.
Barbados Youth limited Carlton to 109 and got home easily in 15.5 overs thanks to an opening stand of 81 between Roshon Primus (45) and Tevyn Walcott (40).
BDFSP kept Banks Wildey winless, sending their opponents crashing for the day’s lowest total of 67 before cruising to victory in 11.5 overs.
In Zone B, CGI Maple ended Premix and Precast Yorkshire’s unbeaten run with a crushing ten-wicket victory at Friendship.
Shane Ramsay made light work of a target of 107 by belting an unbeaten 73 off 38 balls that included seven fours and six sixes as Maple won off 10.3 overs.
Police were also kept winless after going under to CounterPoint Wanderers by 35 runs at Weymouth. Jason Greenes scored exactly 50 to lift Wanderers to 136 for four and the hosts were kept down to 101 for seven.
In the other match, LIME defeated ESA Pickwick by 18 runs at Wildey. (HG)
