The Stephen Alleyne Sport for Life Centre, which is based at Kensington Oval, will be staging a fundraising road race on Saturday.
The race, which will take place under the patronage of Dr Yolanda Alleyne, the widow of the late Stephen Alleyne, will start at 4 p.m, and is open to runners and walkers.
All participants in the Sport for Life Programme along with their parents and siblings are expected to participate in the event.
The route will cover four kilometres, from Independence Square to Browne’s Beach on Bay Street, via River Road, Constitution Road, Belmont Road, Pine Road, Culloden Road, Beckles Road, and then on to Bay Street with two finish lines at the entrance to Brownes Beach – one for runners and one for walkers.
The Sport for Life Programme is a legacy programme from the Cricket World Cup 2007, in which Alleyne was deeply involved, and offers the participants an opportunity to be assisted with mathematics, reading and English.
In addition they are offered sessions in basic computer skills, life skills, HIV/AIDS education, conversational Spanish, cricketing skills and general physical activities.
The programme runs from 9 a.m to 3 p.m on Saturdays and is open to children whose parents recognise that their children need help in the areas selected and who are willing to abide by the programme’s rules.
The major sponsors/donors are United Insurance and Cave Shepherd, while Illuminat, the Barbados Cricket Association, the National Sports Council, Cricket Legends of Barbados, Chickmont Foods, and Live Consulting (UK) are also partners.
The public is invited to participate. (PR)
