Strikers out of Academy

The 30 teachers who staged a strike at the start of the term will not be a part of the eight-day Easter Academy at Alexandra School, which starts on Monday.
President of the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union (BSTU), Mary Redman, said the teachers took the decision in the interest of avoiding further conflict at the already tension-filled St Peter plant.
Redman said classes for the academy were designed by principal Jeff Broomes without consultation with the relevant year heads and heads of department, and only covered nine subject areas.
Further, she said, the teachers had started to work on the timetable for the customary Easter classes, when Broomes distributed his own timetable for the sponsored academy. Participating teachers will be paid $30 per hour.
