THE TOTALS haven’t been big, but the same certainly can’t be said of the crowds at Kensington Oval.

Barbados’ huge success in the ongoing regional T20 tournament has been met with an even bigger number of spectators, as at least 25 500 fans have packed the Oval over the last three nights of cricket action to far outstrip last year’s six-day total.

Event manager of West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), Cindy McLean, says the figure for the Barbados leg of the competition has far exceeded last year’s sum of 17 000 for the 2011 edition, but the overwhelming turnout has not been surprising to the WICB.

“We set ourselves a target of a 20 per cent increase each year and so far we are well ahead of that so we are pleased [because] we had a target figure in mind and we’ve met and far exceeded that figure,” said McLean minutes before the anticipated Barbados-Trinidad semi-final."

That photo of patrons gathered to purchase tickets to watch a cricket game at Kensington might enthuse the WICB, but in actual fact, it shows that the WICB is not yet ready for prime time. Patrons are subjected to the mercies of the weather while waiting for sometimes greater than half an hour to purchase tickets through one of 4 windows of a 20ft container. Mostly, the lines are not orderly, and there can be as many as 4 clusters of people jockeying for position to get to a window only to hear from a female who really couldn’t care, but playing on her Blackberry, that there are no tickets available. Those at the end of the 4 clusters have no way of finding out that there are no tickets at the window to be bought, so they continue to follow each other like lemmings. Finally, on arrival at the window, we’re told by the female that only tickets for the party stand are available, but one would need to go somewhere else to get them. At that point, it’s time for me to head back home. By now you can tell I’m talking from my own experience. The WICB is not yet ready for prime time, and won’t get my entry fee to any cricket matches until they can treat my patronage with respect.
