TALK BACK: Readers fuming over BWA meter issue

In the midst of all that happened last week, one story which attracted the attention of online readers was the installation of water meters at an upscale property in Porters, St James, where no water usage had been billed for ten years.

A NATION investigation revealed that 28 meters were installed after a fee of $9 000 was paid.

However, Barbados Water Authority (BWA) chairman Dr Atlee Brathwaite said no bills had been issued for the prior ten years because they were still trying to determine “whose fault it was”.

But that mattered very little to online readers who insisted money should be recouped.

Here are their views.

Lynda Bonnett: How much back money did they pay?

CoCo Tee Jazz: And yet the working poor have to dish out $400 per month for a water bill; shaking my head at this “error”.

Cumberbatch Sophia: I would like BWA to disconnect my meter for ten years and give me some free water too.

Carmen Graham: Don’t just talk, do something. Everyone should be treated fairly if whoever used the water for ten years, let them pay for the ten years. No matter what, let them pay.

Maria Leclair Rose Dasilva: How convenient the official responsible is no longer employed by the BWA. There should be an investigation process and the person responsible should be in attendance regardless to whether or not he/she works with BWA.

Kareem Silverfoxx Simon: People with money getting way with bare murder all about this island. They should be billed for the ten years and pay it in instalments . . . . As [soon as] the poor don’t pay one month, them wanna disconnect.

Gibson Jethro: Perhaps the owners were of the view that water is free in Barbados.

Cheryl Maynard: There is so much that is wrong. It’s a waste of time to complain. There are no checks and balances. Who or what company does the accounting for the Government?

Princess Tiny Neferua: I want to live in a gated community because the postman can easily find you every month when you live in a gap to give you a water bill. Could you imagine the amount of water these rich people used in ten years and ain’t even pay for one drop?

Judy Kinch: So what happened to all the water they enjoyed for the last ten years? The BWA write that off? They should be made to pay at today’s rate and late fees on every month.

Michael Oneal: So them gine pay for the ten years?

Donna Burnett: I hope when they get the bill, it retroactive.

Kelly Edghill: Don’t meters have to be read? Did no one realise they were missing a street?

Keisha Boyce: Pay for what? That’s the BWA’s mistake. They can’t charge the people for their mistake.

Ginger Haynes: The poor man would have to fork up every cent, don’t care who mistake it was.
