Taste of Bajan culture

Taste of Bajan culture Independence jubilation at Springer Memorial School.

Mon, November 29, 2010 - 12:02 AM

The auditorium of the Springer Memorial Secondary School was transformed into an old-time village last Friday with students getting a taste of Bajan culture.

The theme Expressions Of Bim, conceptualised by general studies teacher Marcia Atwell, was backdropped by a chattel house and coconut tree painting by art and English teacher Brenda Russell.

The presentation extended into the courtyard where there was an exhibition of aspects of Barbadian culture. These included emblems of communication in early Barbados, as well as children’s recreational activities like pitching marbles, riding scooters and steering rollers.

The all-day event included a formal morning session in which guest speaker Julia Beckles paralleled Barbados’ Independence with the students’ burgeoning independence. She stressed the importance of realising and accepting personal responsibility.

The entertainment saw excited students occupying centre stage as they sang, acted, danced and modelled. The very well received modelling segment featured II Upper Fifth students who appeared in casual and formal wear.

Star athlete Sade-Mariah Greenidge showed that she could be in fine form, whether on the track or on the catwalk.

The show, emceed by teachers Kerri Massiah and Joanna Arthur, ended with the vibrant sounds of popular calypsos that left the auditorium reverberating with  Independence rhythms.

Shontia Richards and Monica Waite were full of patriotic zeal.

The two youngsters thoroughly enjoyed themselves as they took in Natahlee and Shontelle’s Colours, which was belted out by Upper Fifth’s Ashli Greene and former Junior Calypso Monarch Anita Charles. (AH)
