Teen girl hangs herself

PORT-OF-SPAIN – While her colleagues were celebrating their success in the recent Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE), a disappointed Naparima Girls’ High School pupil committed suicide on Thursday night.Kalyzan Beharry, 18, was discovered hanging from burglar-proofing in her bedroom around 7:45 p.m.She tied a noose around a metal bar and jumped, police said.Beharry lived at McConnie Street, Gulf View, La Romaine, with her mother, Karla Singh.Singh left her daughter at home around 4:45 p.m. to run errands, police said. She returned three hours later to find her only child hanging from a cord. Singh attempted to rescue her daughter, but she was already dead.The body was removed to the San Fernando General Hospital mortuary, where an autopsy was performed.The Express visited the family’s home but no one answered the doorbell. The doors were locked and a car was parked in the driveway.Naparima Girls’ High School principal Patricia Ramgoolam said she was saddened by the news.“The school, the board, the church, teachers and all of Naparima Girls’ are sad right now. It is like losing a member of our family. We have no answers because she was like any other student here,” she said.Ramgoolam said the teenager participated in piano, tennis, life-saving and the President’s Award team.Beharry wrote chemistry, physics, communications studies and pure mathematics in the May examinations. The results were released on Thursday afternoon.“She passed all of her subjects, so I cannot understand what happened. And I do not want to reveal her results, as this is already a distressing time for the family. This is a challenging time for all of us and I want to extend condolences to the family,” Ramgoolam said. Investigators said, however, Beharry was not satisfied with her examination results. San Fernando police are continuing investigations. ( Express)
