THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH brought the 14 Stations of the Cross to the streets of Oistins yesterday.
The moving production included a bruised and bloodied “Jesus” – played by entertainer Derek Fields – struggling along the streets barefoot with a cross across his shoulders.
The procession began in the car park of Super Centre with a prayer from Bishop Jason Gordon and ended in Bay Gardens where “Jesus” was crucified, breathing his last and saying his famous last words before the eventual resurrection.
Organiser Edith Moise said the idea came about after their 2009 production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.
“After that musical, everybody was asking what we were going to do next so we went over different things and thought ‘why not put the Stations of the Cross on the road?’” she said, adding plans began in February and the hardest thing was getting the music in place.
However, it does not look like Barbadians can look forward to watching the Stations of the Cross on the streets as an annual event. Moise said it was simply too much work so they would most likely be returning to the old format for the foreseeable future. (CA)
