Things Bajan: Conkies

For the month of November, we will focus on things Barbados as this country celebrates its independence. Every day we will be highlighting Barbadian sayings, artefacts unique to the country, as well as personalities, icons, some places and things that reflect Barbados.
Today we focus on Conkies.
The conkie is a form of bread made of Indian corn flour with sweet potato, pumpkin and other ingredients added. The broad leaf of the banana plant is “singed” to mnake it less brittle and dough is rapped in these leaves and steamed until cooked.
When Guy Fawkes Day used to be celebrated in Barbados on November 5, conkies were the delicacy for the occasion since it was around this time that the Indian corn ripens to produce the flour with which the conkie is traditionally made. With Independence in November 1966, the celebration of Guy Fawkes’ Day was discontinued and conkies are now eaten mainly at Independence time.
