The battle to carry the Barbados Labour Party’s (BLP) flag in St Philip West is heating up with a defeated candidate vying for another shot at a seat in Parliament and a pastor and retired soldier throwing their hats in the ring.
With elections due in less than a year, political newcomers Grace Showan and Don Callender and former senator and minister Lynette Eastmond have written to the party’s general secretary indicating their desire to contest the nomination.
A date has not been set, but the three have reported good response from residents on their rounds in the constituency.
Eastmond, 48, said her decision to re-enter the political arena and make a third attempt at winning the seat was primarily at the urging of “those within the branch, the constituency and even further afield in Barbados”.
In announcing the comeback on her Facebook page, the attorney at law said she was overwhelmed by the positive response. She described herself as a “conscientious, hardworking and caring individual” who had been active in the constituency in anticipation of the day she was granted the “high honour” of representing residents.
