Government is promising more modernized facilities at the Transport Board’s Weymouth complex, supported by an improved and more structured relationship with the worker-owned United Commercial Autoworks Limited (UCAL).
Minister of Public Works and Transport John Boyce today announced the plans as he moved a resolution to approve a Government guarantee of a $10.9 million loan plus interest borrowed by the Transport Board from the Barbados National Bank (now Republic Bank Limited) for financing its operating shortfall, paying creditors and purchasing capital equipment.The $10.9 million is the residual amount from $18 million borrowed in February 2003 by a previous Barbados Labour Party (BLP) administration.
Boyce told Parliament that the previous administration had failed to build on the UCAL-Government relationship left by the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) in 1994, but that was being corrected.
