Tridents storm into final

The Tridents are far from broken.
And the Tallawahs definitely came up short this time around.
Barbados Tridents stormed into the final of the Caribbean Premier League Twenty20 last night, defeating defending champions Jamaica Tallawahs by 88 runs in the final preliminary match at Warner Park in St Kitts.
The supreme fielding of the boys in ultramarine and gold, combined with penetrative bowling, saw the Tridents rout Jamaica for 87 in 15.3 overs, after posting a challenging 175 for eight in their 20 overs.
The Barbados Tridents were able to top the standings by virtue of having the best net run-rate of +0.860, ahead of Guyana Amazon Warriors (+0.414), Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel (+0.317) and the Tallawahs (-0.124). All four teams had identical records of six wins and three losses and finished on 12 points.
At the start of the match, the Tridents were actually in fourth spot, but by virtue of the convincing win, they were catapulted straight into Saturday’s final at the same venue.
Tridents’ captain Kieron Pollard came good with the bat, scoring 63, and also took an excellent catch on the boundary, earning the man-of-the match award.
With the loss, Jamaica will now have to play the Red Steel in the first play-off match on Wednesday with the winner opposing the Amazon Warriors on Thursday to decide who meets the Tridents.
Batting first, the Tridents started patiently in the first two overs, before explosive opener Dwayne Smith finally loosened his shoulders, scoring 32 off 27 balls in a 35-run opening stand with William Perkins.
After Smith holed out, Perkins came to the party, and hit two fours and two sixes in 36 off 32 balls to put the Tridents in a good position, before he nicked a catch to Tallawahs’ keeper Chadwick Walton.
After that, skipper Pollard brought out his big willow, and attached a big performance to it, slamming five sixes and four fours off just 36 balls, to place the pressure firmly at the feet of Chris Gayle’s men.
In reply, nothing went right for the Jamaican side.
Gayle survived a strong shout for leg before from a Jason Holder delivery that appeared a tad high.
But he couldn’t move his feet any faster a few balls later, trapped plumb on the back foot from the second ball of Ravi Rampaul’s first over.
With Gayle making only one, the Tallawahs needed a big innings from Nkrumah Bonner or Andre Russell to salvage a victory.
They got it from Bonner, who made 47 off 40 balls, but when Rayad Emrit forced him into a slog and had him caught by Jeevan Mendis in the 14th over, the writing was on the wall for the champs.
Russell, dangerous in the field with his top-notch catching, promised plenty with the bat, but made only four, another victim of Emrit, and Jamaica fell away.
Leg-spinner Jeevan Mendis played a key role with his leg-spin bowling, taking two wickets for 15 runs in his four tidy overs while off-spinner Ashley Nurse also grabbed two wickets. (BA)
