TT celebrates Olympian win with holiday

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar has declared today a public holiday here as Trinidad and Tobago celebrates the performance of gold medalist Keshorn Walcott and the rest of the team at the London Olympics.

“In tribute to their achievements I have advised the acting President that Monday be appointed a national holiday….:” said Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissaser in a broadcast to the nation yesterday.

Keshorn Walcott won the javelin gold medal at the London Olympics to give Trinidad and Tobago their first Olympic title in a field event.

Walcott, the world junior champion, threw a national record 84.58 metres with his second attempt and nobody improved on the mark for the remainder of the final.

It was Trinidad and Tobago’s first gold medal of the 2012 Games.
