AS ACTS OF POACHING continue to grab the headlines, the deputy director of the Barbados Sea Turtle Project says the conservation group is yet to get a lock on the market for the illegal meat.
“The automatic assumption would be that if we’re having adults poached and if it’s a continuing situation, that the poachers would not be killing the turtles and butchering them if they didn’t have a market for the meat,” said Carla Daniel.
“What exactly that market is and who are these persons who are willing to buy turtle meat we can’t speak to that,” she explained.
Daniel was speaking to the Daily Nation moments before leading a group of walkers on the final Barbados Museum & Historical Society/Barbados Sea Turtle Project Turtle Walk, along the Richard Haynes Boardwalk last Saturday night.
