TWO ORGANISATIONS are waiving fees in order to ensure Barbados’ children get a well-rounded education.

The Christ Church West Constituency Council and the Pinelands Creative Workshop (PCW) are both offering free homework classes for those sitting the Common Entrance Exam.

In the case of the council, the classes – now being done for the fourth year – are for those within the constituency although they are also accommodating a few students who are not.

Chairman Peter Barrow said the focus would be more on reading as this was lacking.

“It is part of Education Month and we are placing ourselves as the council for education. We had a good opening session with parents and children as the parents realise it is a good savings for them in light of the financial situation,” he said.

The classes will be held every Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

PCW will also be holding its classes on Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to noon at Parkinson Memorial Secondary School.

Special projects coordinator Sophia Greaves-Broome said it was a part of their youth beyond expectations project in collaboration with Aries Technologies Inc. and MCTV. She said MCTV was a new partner in the six-year project and had donated school bags and supplies.

The classes will be taught by Parkinson Memorial principal Jeff Broomes and a team of tutors.

Greaves-Broome said the partnership was in response to the decline in Common Entrance performances and was open to schoolchildren in the community. However, it is already growing beyond expectations.

“What we didn’t expect was that schools outside the community would take advantage of the programme which is a clear indication there is a need for parents to find avenues for their children to study for the 11-Plus,” she said.

Greaves-Broome said all were welcome as they recognised everything could not be done from the 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. of a typical school day.

Parent Marcelline Gilkes said the programme was wonderful as it sought to help children whose parents could not afford lessons. (CA)
