Unions wary of industrial court

The voluntaristic approach to industrial relations works for Barbados.

Both the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union (BSTU) and National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) were firm in that view when they responded to a suggestion by Minster of Education and Human Resource Development Ronald Jones that an Industrial Relations Court (IRC) be set up in Barbados.

BSTU president Mary Redman said there was enough evidence against the establishment of an industrial relations court if Trinidad was considered.

“Anyone suggesting such a development just needs to look at Trinidad and see how that does not work,” she commented. “Our voluntaristic approach to industrial relations in Barbados has worked well for us generally and had stood us in good stead. Insofar as we have a viable working social partnership that is a world model, such an institution [IRC] I do not see as being to our best advantage.”

Posted by Tony Waterman 1 year ago: That is because in some jurisdictions that have or had them the Union Movement did suffer some defeats at the hand of the Ind.Relations Courts but there many International Jurisdictions that do have them and they do work quite well, I don't see why you are naming T&T as an example, because nothing seems to work there anyway including the COP, The other Party Ran the Country down the Drain,so they are a Very bad example how About examples like:-Australia,Zambia,Ireland,Malawi,Kerala(Southern India) Denmark,Norway,Sweden,Finland,New Zealand,All 10 Canadian Provinces,The Phillippines, Pakistan,Swaziland,Antigua & Barbuda, and allthose other too many to mention that have successful Industrial Relations COURTS/COMMISSIONS, do you know something that we IMBECILES don't know????
I am not a big fan of Minister Jones but i do think that at last he is really onto something good here
