United Force in G4S fight Sir Roy Trotman (FP)

By GERALYN EDWARD, Business Editor | Sat, July 07, 2012 - 12:11 AM

SIR ROY TROTMAN says he has not called out the top-drawer cavalry in his union’s fight with security firm G4S, but the battle is now heading to the British headquarters of the company with help from affiliate UNI Global Union.

The development came as general secretary of UNI Global Union, Philip Jennings, visited Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago to offer support to affiliate members in those two countries and share information.

During a Press conference yesterday at the Barbados Workers’ Union’s headquarters Solidarity House, Jennings joined BWU general secretary Sir Roy and other regional trade unionists, noting that G4S had signed agreements with UNI Global Union on how workers should be treated through its worldwide operations.

But the British trade union leader said: “We have a global agreement with G4S. I am staggered to discover through Sir Roy and the BWU that the spirit of this agreement is not being applied on the ground. This is not acceptable to us. It is new homework to pursue when I go back home.”

Kudos to you United Force and Sir Roy. Rights of workers, whether unionized or not, need to be protected. A situation where an employee is unjustly dismissed and a factor in the dismissal is an inappropriate relationship 'allegedly' existing between the manager and the accused ought not to be. There should be some form of recourse or investigations into matters of this nature. To many of these scenarios exist.
