Three schools, including Alexandra, are earmarked for sixth forms and four primary schools are to be rebuilt.

Minister of Education Ronald Jones made the disclosure yesterday.

He said “post-secondary” education would start at the island’s only single-sex schools, the all-girls Springer Memorial, at Alexandra and St Leonard’s Boys’ School from September “if everything goes well”.

Jones was the featured speaker at the Democratic Labour Party’s weekly lunchtime lecture, in the party’s George Street, Belleville, St Michael headquarters. The lecture was titled Reprovisioning the Education Sector: The Second Education Revolution. (CA)

Posted by Frank Husbands 3 months, 4 weeks ago: Fantastic news as for one it is a common sense idea that will save Barbados millions for one will not have to look at building more capacity at BCC.Two, it will begin to take away the stigma that newer secondary schools such as St.Leonards and Springer are no way to go school.Hopefully it will evolve into scrapping the 11+.

Posted by David Hall 3 months, 4 weeks ago: As a teacher while I am elated that other six from places are being created in Barbados and finally one in the north, I must dismiss the current declaration that Alexandra will be having a six form school come September as purely an election gimmick. If for the last two to three years the board, heads of department principal deputy principal and ministry officials have all been embroiled in one unresolved controversy who has been planning for this sixth form? Even though some may argue the time is right for expansion of sixth forms and one is needed at Alexandra, is the timing appropriate. There is a difference between the time and the timing. When parachuting and the plane hovers in the air, the time to jump has certainly arrived but even then the timing of the jump needs be precise lest you are become tangled in some undesired situation or miss your landing beneath. Simply said, Minister, Fix ALEXANDRA FIRST THEN TALK SIXTH FORM. This ad hoc approach being demonstrated here may help to explain why so many issues in government go wrong. Rather than deal we issues we like to create diversions or other talking points around the same matter.
