UWI have Youth reeling

By Harold Eastmond at 3Ws Oval | Sun, July 14, 2013 - 12:02 AM

Attacking half-centuries by Jonathan Carter, Kavem Hodge, Anthony Alleyne and a three-wicket burst by Nekoli Parris put Sagicor UWI in command over Guardian General Barbados Youth on the first day of their sixth round LIME Elite Division match yesterday.

At stumps, Barbados Youth were tottering at 39 for four replying to UWI’s first innings total of 301 for four declared.

Barbados Youth were decimated by the exodus of most of their players heading off with the Barbados Under-19 team to St Kitts, with only captain Roshon Primus and Shaquille Cumberbatch having played in the last game.

They opted to field first on winning the toss in beautiful batting conditions and were made to pay for the decision.

Barbados Youth started well when Shacaya Thomas was run out with the score on two in the second over. But the elegant left-hander Alleyne and Hodge were not going to miss out as they shared a partnership of 144 for the second wicket.

Dominican Hodge struck six fours and a six in making 71 from 91 balls while Alleyne was more sedate in compiling 67 from 119 deliveries with only two fours and a six.

Barbados Youth’s best period of the day came when Hodge and Alleyne were dismissed within two runs of each other.

UWI captain Kyle Corbin was out for 14 with the score on 198 for five but there was no respite for Barbados Youth as they had to contend with the aggression of Carter.

He scored 85 off just 62 balls, with eight fours and five sixes.

He and Raymon Reifer (33 from 28 deliveries) combined in a quickfire stand of 83 that enabled UWI to declare at 301 for six.

Slow bowler Nekoli Parris made sure that the Youth’s miserable day continued by snapping up three wickets by the time the score reached 11. Leg-spinner Akeem Dewar took a fourth wicket before the close.
