CHAMPIONS Sagicor UWI made it five wins out of five matches on a day of mainly one-sided games in the Sagicor General Twenty20 competition yesterday.
In maintaining their 100 per cent winning record, UWI rolled over Guardian General Barbados Youth with a nine-wicket victory at Cane Garden.
Big-hitting Chadwick Walton lashed an unbeaten 73 off 33 balls that included eight fours and five sixes as UWI lost only one wicket in racing to a target of 124 in 12.3 overs.
UWI, who won the tournament last year with ten successive victories, remain the only unbeaten team in the competition after inflicting a loss against the previously undefeated Barbados Youth, who failed to mount a significant total when they were undermined by a four-wicket haul by medium-pacer Jonathan Carter.
Six of the eight matches resulted in victories for the team batting second and only two games went down to the wire.
At Trents, hosts CGI Maple won by four wickets off the last ball against ESA Field Pickwick thanks to a boundary through extra-cover by Neval Grazette off pacer Jared Gilkes.
Grazette finished unbeaten on 22 but Maple’s chase of 119 was set up by captain Renaldo Parris’ 36 and Pedro Agard’s 22.
At Desmond Haynes Oval, there was also an exciting two-run victory for home team Carlton over Republic Bank St Catherine.
Carlton mounted a competitive 163 for five on the back of a belligerent opening stand of 137 between Shayne Moseley, who cracked 74 off 61 balls and Kirk Gibson, whose 57 came from 39 balls.
St Catherine needed 14 runs from the final over, but managed 11. Kenroy Williams, with an unbeaten 42 and captain Derick Bishop, with 22, kept the visitors in contention but the dismissal of the latter in the final over proved crucial.
There were two outstanding individual all-round performances on the day.
LIME’s Ashley Nurse belted an unbeaten 85 off 36 balls – an innings that was bombarded with eight sixes and five fours. In tandem with captain Randy Thomas, who made 74 off 37 balls, Nurse helped to lift LIME to the day’s highest total of 230 for three against CounterPoint Wanderers at Dayrells Road.
Nurse returned to take two wickets in Wanderers’ gallant response of 194 for seven in which the in-form Diego Stuart topscored with 50, his second half-century in successive days.
BDFSP’s Ravenda Persaud also featured with bat and ball in an eight-wicket win against BRC BCL at Paragon.
After collecting three for 13 in BCL’s total of 115 for six, Persaud smashed 73 not out off 50 balls with six sixes and two fours to carry the home team to their target in 17.1 overs.
After four straight defeats, Banks Wildey completed their first win of the tournament, defeating YMPC by eight wickets at Beckles Road.
YMPC were restricted to 96 for eight, having been kept in check by three-wicket hauls from off-spinner Marlon Hoyte and leg-spinner Shadd Simmons.
Banks Wildey carefully approached the target, taking 18.3 to get there.
Police slumped to a fifth consecutive defeat to remain winless after losing to Super Centre by nine wickets at Queen’s Park.
Four-wicket hauls by Omar Marshall and Andre Gill limited the lawmen to 86 and Spartan coasted to 90 for one in 12.1 overs with the help of an unbeaten 57 by Akeem Springer.
In the other match, ICBL Empire beat Premix and Precast Yorkshire by six wickets at Bank Hall in a top-of-the-the-table Zone ‘B’ clash.
Yorkshire were trying their best to defend 103, reducing Empire to 38 for four before an unbroken fifth wicket stand of 66 between Kevin Stoute (39 not out) and Ryan Hinds (37 not out) ensured there were no further alarms for the hosts.
It was Yorkshire’s second successive defeat after starting the tournament with three wins. (HG)
