UWI to query LIME Elite ruling

The University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus will be seeking a legal opinion on the ruling which resulted in CGI Maple emerging as the 2013 LIME Elite cricket champions.
Word of this came yesterday from principal Sir Hilary Beckles who said he was “concerned about the process” followed by the Barbados Cricket Association’s (BCA) Complaints and Disputes Committee.
On Friday, the BCA announced that Maple had been awarded the maximum 20 points after their protest against Carlton over the unsatisfactory state of the pitch at their Desmond Haynes Oval home ground was upheld by the Complaints and Disputes Committee.
This meant that Maple, who had ended the season on 98 points, moved to 111, overtaking Sagicor UWI, who finished on 102 after their nine-wicket victory over the Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme (BDFSP) in the rescheduled first series match.
“We will be seeking legal opinion on the judicial process that led to this change and if in our assessment it has been fair and reasonable and in the best interest of cricket, we will do nothing about it.
“But if we find that there are issues that should be of concern to cricket in Barbados then we will take all the options available to us because at the end of the day I believe that titles ought to be won on the field of play,” he said.
Sir Hilary made the comments following a ceremony to rename the old administration building the Leslie Robinson Building after the campus’ first principal.
The principal  said he did not believe that titles should be “allocated by meetings in boardrooms and by conversations between select groups of individuals”.
“I would have preferred the winner to have emerged without dispute on the field of play. This is in my judgment a matter of great concern for the culture of cricket in Barbados that we in the University have committed ourselves to rebuilding.
“The reason why the university has thrown its resources and its energy behind cricket is because we understand the importance of cricket to Barbados and the Caribbean and the university wants to play its role in maintaining [and] sustaining excellence in cricket,” he said. (NB)
