Vets star for Progressive, Drax Hall

Wed, September 08, 2010 - 12:40 AM

Two old rivals met at Hill Road over the weekend when the Co-Operators General Insurance Junior Knockout Competition continued with Progressive downing their St George neighbours RT’s Drax Hall 25-20, 25-16.

Both teams fielded a combination of youngsters and veterans, a flashback to the many battles these teams fought in the past. Two former nationals took the lead role for the teams.

Kerry Grace led Progressive into the next round, while Adrian Dottin had the hot hands for Drax Hall who have also advanced but have one match remaining against The Club to determine overall position.

Chargers’ men also trounced the Combined Schools in straight sets, 25-10, 25-14.

However, on Sunday night the Chargers women, in spite of solid attacking play from Maria Waithe and Janelle Boucher, could not stop Sunpower Foundation United who triumphed 25-20, 16-25, 15-10.

A large crowd turned up at LIME on Saturday evening for a triple-header, with O-Aces women sinking Northliners 25-7, 25-10, and Foundation going down to Rockets, handing them their first win of the season, 12-25, 22-24.

There was no sizzling pork on the grill for the lime but in a very tantalising battle the LIME women edged Carefree Toners 25-8, 20-25, 24-26. Toners, who previously trained at the LIME venue, have now lost the opening sets of their last two matches in single digits. (KB)
