THE ALLIANCE OF SMALL ISLAND STATES (AOSIS) has adopted the Barbados Declaration On Achieving Sustainable Energy For All In Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
Ministers and other heads of delegation of AOSIS member countries unanimously demonstrated their support for the declaration on the final day of a United Nations high-level conference at Hilton Barbados.
Michelle Gyles-McDonnough, resident coordinator of the United Nations Development Programme for Barbados and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States, said the adoption of the declaration was a momentous occasion which marked the beginning of a “journey to carve out a new development paradigm for SIDS”.
This paradigm, she said, is powered by a commitment to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and increase the percentage of renewable energy in the national and global energy mix.
