What’s Trending: Five more to be freed

The Nation’s Associate Editor, Sherie Holder-Olutayo takes a look at what’s trending today in Barbados.
Today’s story in the Weekend Nation that revealed that five more convicted murderers that spent decades in prison are to be freed later this year, has our online readers buzzing. Here are some of their comments.
John DaSilva: Prison is as much about rehabilitation as it is about punishment. If you treat criminals like animals when they get out, they will re-offend.
Reeko Lynch: They served their time, that's the law. The one who was released recently was 17 when he went in, he's 45 now and a much better human being than when he was jailed. I just hope the others have learned their lesson as well and are ready to do something valuable with their lives now that they have served their sentences.
Deon Mayers: Not everyone who kills gets life in prison ...people get released every year. And not to shock you some of the deportees are convicted killers too. I think this may be a case where we have so many at one time. Actually this is the first time I've notice the Nation covering releases, it must be all the hype from Garcia. Let us just hope and pray that they don't recommit any offences.
Sharon Woolley: It's time Barbados does what every other country has to do, build another prison - not only can you keep these scum locked up, but you create a lot of jobs from builders to prison warders etc.
