The Nation’s Online Editor Carol Martindale looks at What’s Trending today in Barbados.
Readers welcome the news that Government is coming to the rescue of the cash strapped University of the West Indies (UWI).
Principal and Pro Vice-Chancellor Sir Hilary Beckles said he had met over the last few days with Prime Minister Freundel Stuart and Minister of Finance Christopher Sinckler, and they had given the assurance that Government would be coming to the aid of the university that has a staggering debt surpassing its operational costs.
Our readers commented on this development.
David Aplmac: “This money coming from where? Another loan to the Government? Or printing more paper money?”
Natalia Reid Walcott: “Well, as a new student, I am grateful that as Barbadians we have had free education for all these years. Just paying the amenities fees is not a problem, but if it came down to us having to pay tuition, I don't have $30 far less $30 000.”
Wayne T Griffith: “Let's hope that these "assurances" and "commitments" made by the government are not reminiscent of those received by Redjet.
