The Nation’s Associate Editor, Sherie Holder-Olutayo takes a look at what’s trending today in Barbados.
Today’s Sunday Sun story which looks at whether legal action should be taken against the owner of the building and the operator of the store in the aftermath of the Campus Trendz tragedy has peaked the interest of our online readers. Here are some of their comments.
Mary Yearwood: Remember, Mr.Comissiong, that this is not America, but instead beautiful, but tiny Barbados. I hope the families of the deceased will get some help and comfort, but Barbados from donkey years past has always had cramped establishments everywhere because everyone has had to make the most of whatever space they had. It's not that the owners purposely were trying to scrimp on resources, and that's why they did not install a second exit. I don't think the owners are responsible. What should happen is that the responsible culprits should be made to labor and pay every penny to the family and children of the deceased, in addition to rotting in jail.
Dale M: Let me offer my sympathy to the family and friends of those six beautiful young girls gone to soon. While i think justice has not been serve, because those two men should be on death row sweating worse than those girls did. Nothing good can come from the blame game. Keep responsibility where it belongs with those two greedy idiots.
Linda Smith: This tragedy was extremely sad, however, if these families win a civil suit, that can be a precedent set to help change the building codes in Barbados. This needs to be more than a personal issue. There needs to be reform before more people are hurt.
Bim Bum: If the store had only one entrance/exit....isn't that against the law?? And why aren't we prosecuting the Governmental Agencies in charge of checking for such things and enforcing said law so that alternative exits are freely available? How come that illegal situation was allowed to go on for years/decades.....and no-one rectified the problem? It had to come to this before anything is done?
