What’s Trending:Outraged by funeral dress
Fri, June 22, 2012 - 9:25 AM
The Nation’s Online Editor Carol Martindale looks at What’s Trending today in Barbados.
Some of our online readers are today reacting to the plan by rector of the St Lucy's Parish Church Reverend Curtis Goodridge who says he is banning funerals with "mourning colours optional" requests.
Many of them are disagreeing with this move and they share their reasons on the Nation’s Facebook page.
Goodridge has taken this move after being outraged by the provocative and inappropriate dress by some young people at a funeral on Tuesday.
He believes that "mourning colours optional" gives young people leeway to wear what they want, where they want and how they want.
This is what some readers said:
Patricia Phillips: “It has nothing to do with the colour clothes. I've attended a funeral with" no mourning colorus" and the mourners were well dressed and I've attended many with traditional mourning colors and some were inappropriately dressed.”
Conchita Moseley: “Black, white, green, purple, red, blue, pink, yellow, orange it makes no difference people cannot be told what to wear to a funeral service; they can wear a rainbow-coloured attire if they so wish. This is 2012 and gone are the days when people were told, all that crap about covering the head wearing a hat in church is out dated. The family of the decease can if they so wished, stay with the traditional black. The younger the decease, the more outrageous the attire and I am all for it. Come dressed up in all colours as if you were attending a rave, so long as you are not exposing too much skin. Anybody who thinks it is disgraceful to attend a funeral dressed colours, is living in the past. Get a more and move with the times.”
Katrina Dionne Collymore: “He seems to be equating wearing mourning colours to being scantily or inappropriately dressed. You can be well attired or not well attired regardless of what colour you choose to wear.”
