What’s Trending:Sprucing up for Royals

Mon, February 20, 2012 - 10:00 AM

The Nation’s Online Editor Carol Martindale looks at What’s Trending today in Barbados.

Some readers are today crying shame on Government’s haste to spruce up some parts of Barbados all because of an upcoming Royal visit.

While they are happy that Barbados is getting a “facelift” they believe the country should be maintained year round, and not just when royals are expected.

The Earl and Countess of Wessex are due in Barbados later this month as part of the celebration of the Queen’s 60th year on the throne. Prime Minister Freundel Stuart said they will be spending a total of $530 643 to host the Royals.

This is what some of our Facebook readers had to say:

Kemar Codrington: “It’s quite a shame now members of the 'royal family' are supposed to be visiting Barbados we are seeing things being done. Some roads are being surfaced in less than two days, road marks are being repainted and trees are being trimmed.”

Kaye Christil Miguelle Belgrave: “Kemar, I agree with you.  It would be much better if these things were better maintained. However, I am just pleased to see that Barbados still knows how to spruce up. I'm glad they have never made me shame when "people" have to come visit. I'm happy we put our best foot forward no matter how rough things get so that I can always hold my head high as a proud Bajan no matter what part of the world I'm in.”

Alana Payne Small: “It shouldn’t take members of the Royal Family coming to Bim to spruce up. It should be done on a regular but I am happy that they are doing it.”

Andre Petite: “That is pretty interesting to know  that they doing all of this for royalty. These things would have never been  done in the next couple of years but because of royalty the Government is putting on a show for the royal family. ..”

Jewell Hall: “…There are poor people living in this country who would do good with that money they are putting out for royalty.”
