Wild winds ruin tree

The strong winds stripped a large mahogany tree in Oistins, Christ Church, of more than half of its biggest branches yesterday, creating problems for early morning traffic. No one was hurt.
The tree was victim to the strong winds that have been affecting Barbados by the passing of a tropical wave over the last few days – the wave subsequently developed into Tropical Storm Rafael.
The branches, which bystanders said fell around 9 a.m., blocked half of the main road just a 100 yards away from the Texaco gas station, creating an inconvenience for the five plus vendors who would normally ply their trade in the tree’s shade.
Oistins traffic was diverted through an open lot as a Ministry of Transport and Works crew cut and removed the branches. (KB/LK)
