It has been a year of firsts for Tamisha Williams.
Having reached her maiden national final in June, and she is now poised to compete in her first regional women’s singles final against the highly favoured and #1 seeded Trinidadian Solangel Guzman at the 2014 CAREBACO Championships in Kingston, Jamaica tonight.
After securing wins against Mikaylia Haldane of Jamaica 21-18, 21-19 and Nakeisha Blake 15-21, 21-14, 10 in the previous rounds, Williams defeated the Jamaican’s No. 1 Ruth Williams who is seeded No. 2 in the tournament. The pair clashed in the semi-finals and the Barbadian was able to maintain her focus to secure the victory 21-17, 21-15 in front a hostile partisan crowd.
Williams becomes the first Barbadian woman to reach the singles final since the Barbados Badminton Association’s successful revival of the regional tournament in 2010 when it was staged at the Wildey Gymnasium.
She will also have the opportunity to double up in the women’s doubles division with partner Shari Watson after they defeated the Trinidadian pair Blake and Guzman 21-18, 21-19.
Unfortunately, Watson lost out on her bid to go for a potential double as well, when she lost her mixed doubles semi-final game with partner Andre Padmore 21-15, 14-21, 21-11 to Garron Palmer and Haldane of Jamaica.
Teenage phenom Amanda Haywood will also be seeking glory in pursuit of three titles – the Under-15 singles and doubles and Under-17 mixed doubles. The 13-year-old St Michael School student will play Taina Daley of Jamaica in the final after dispatching another Jamaican Karie Dawson 21-6, 21-14 in her semi-final encounter.
Haywood partnered with Guyanese Priyanna Ramhdani to defeat Jamaican pair Dawson and Taliyah Richardson 21-13, 21-8 in the semi-final and will now face in the finals against No. 1 seeds Taina Daley and Shezelle Mctyson of Jamaica.
Haywood’s chances are good despite having to play the Jamaicans on home soil. Her third chance at gold will come as she steps up a division, with long-standing mixed doubles partner Shae Martin in the Under-17 division.
The duo defeated Jamaica’s Shaunte Smith and Shamar Hunter 21-14, 21-9 in the semi-final match and will clash against a tougher Jamaican team, Alana Bailey and Shane Wilson, who easily won their semi 21-6, 21-8 against another Jamaican pair.
