Women’s club calls for more volunteers

BARBADIANS MUST BE MORE proactive concerning abuse in society, said Annie Bertrand, fund-raising chair of the Canadian Women’s Club of Barbados.

In a telephone interview yesterday Bertrand said the club dealt with programmes geared to helping women, children and the elderly, noting more vigilance and action in the community would go a long way.

“They don’t have to volunteer for hundreds of hours like we do; just get involved in the society around them instead of turning a blind eye to abuse,” she said.

“Not everyone has the time to get involved. We find a lot of the children we deal with don’t need money as much as attention and time, so that’s what we do but it is not easy to go every [week]. Also, some of them have anger issues and emotional difficulties and the more we get to know them, the more we realize how harsh it is for them,” she said.
