It can be categorized in a number of ways, the current craze that is sweeping the island.

Zumba is part of a healthy lifestyle. It is also a business, and it has become a social event for its participants.

The Zumba Fitness and its fitness bunnies are the focus of this week’s Street Beat.

The normally soothing sounds of the sea were drowned out and replaced by the tempo from a blend of Latin American and Caribbean rhythms, flavoured with moving hip hop tunes.

At sundown, hips were gyrating and other body parts were put to the test during the Latin-inspired dance routines at the Copa, Bay Street.

Marketing manager Maria Boyce believes Zumba is a wonderful way to exercise and have fun in a family environment.

“You can come let go and release your stress. It is great fun and you lose weight while doing it,” said Boyce.

She added: “This Zumba is not like traditional Zumba. This Zumba has a strong Afro-Caribbean element; so it feels like your own. And then nobody is watching anybody else. You can just free yourself up and burn calories and just have tremendous fun.”

The attraction for Tracey Knight-Lloyd was to start a healthy lifestyle, which included an activity that was fun. According to the assistant vice-president of marketing at Sagicor Life Inc., Zumba was definitely the right choice.

“I didn’t want to do something I felt was a bore or something I had to drag myself out to do. Zumba is very fun, very invigorating, very exciting because of the modern music that they play.

“I am a career woman and it works out for me. I can fit it into my schedule and still enjoy myself,” Knight-Lloyd noted.

Reco Moore is one of the liveliest in the pack. He can be found hailing the “Zumba bunnies” during routines.

“You can just come; enjoy yourself, if you make a mistake continue doing it. I came to Zumba on Independence Day last year and I was nervous because I didn’t know anything about it,” he said.

But that did not stop outspoken or seeming hyperactive Moore from coming back to the party.

“The girls told me to come back and I came back with hype energy, and I recognize it has actually worked for me. I am toned, more flexible and everything,” the porter stated.

Nadia Brancker and Leslee Holder are the certified instructors. Both dancers from a young age with a love for working out, Zumba provided the perfect event to bring their version of incorporating fitness and dancing.

Brancker stressed that the workout was not only about fitness and losing weight but also feeling better about yourself.

“You might find people here who might not want to go in the gym, who might be shy but they will come because of the very comfortable setting. And we always tell people that you can’t just come for the sake of working out, but you have to have a balanced diet.

“We are not nutritionists, but we always tell people to go to a nutritionist, go to a doctor, read about different foods and drink a lot of water,” Brancker explained.

And while noting the one-year-old venture was growing, Brancker said her and Holder’s greatest moments were receiving positive feedbacks.

“People tell us that they feel good about themselves. Some people would say they feel like they are losing weight, they feel happier, have more energy . . . and that is what we aim for at Zumba.”
