Bajan once born here

Published on: 11/18/2009.

I TOO WAS "TROUBLED" on reading the article in your November 11 MIDWEEK NATION.

At first, I was in utter shock. How could they want to change the immigration laws like that? The only person I can see really suffering from this is the child who would now be deemed "stateless" in this society.

Is this another ploy to get illegal immigrants out of Barbados? If so, I fear you are going about it in the wrong manner.

A child born here in Barbados - not a citizen? That is so unheard of.

I disaagree, can I claim to be bajan as my greatgrandfather who was born in 1897 in St Lennards Gap and great-greatgrandparents were bajan....serious question

Tell This : 11/21/2009
Tell this to the US who put you and the child out. The only difference is that the child at 20 or more can apply for citizenship in the US.

Why are you shocked? Research for you is definitely in order, Barbados is one of the many countries where practice is normal. Stop coming down on Barbados so hard for trying to do the right thing. This practice was a means for people to gain citizenship to countries without going about it the right way. Government has to do what they deem necessary to keep the population under control so if implementing stricter immigration laws so be it.

You guys need to do some research. You would realise that there are several countries where being born there does not make you a citizen. Some examples are Denmark, The Netherlands Antilles, the Cayman Islands and The Bahamas.

I Disagree!! : 11/18/2009
Barbados cannot be overwhelmed by foreigners. To answer your question, it is sensible for the government to restrict citizenship to the children. If a child born to non-citizens is birthed on bajan soil, and is given citizenship, this could potentially allow illegal immigrants to exploit the system, through thouse children. And correction, being born in Barbados doesn't make you Bajan. YOUR ANCESTORS MUST BE BORN HERE, YOUR BLOOD MUST HAVE ROOT HERE, YOUR HISTORY AS A WHOLE MUST BE FROM HERE. Simply being born in barbados doesn't make u Bajan. It takes more than just talking, eating, and acting like a Bajan in order to be considered Bajan. ANCESTRY, HISTORY, BLOOD, AND FAMILY are the requirements in order to complete the Brotherhood of the Bajan people.
You my friend Miche, are mistakened if you think that the Bajan essence can be acquired through birth. A Bajan is Bajan through blood, and that blood must stem from the early times of our nation. This is NOT AMERICA!! There has to be a criteria to this system.

BAJANS UNITE!! KEEP BARBADOS FOR THE FUTURE OF OUR CHILDREN!

Please check the situation in the Bahamas. There is no right to citizenship to a person born in the Bahamas if the parents are not Bahamian. Clearly you may not have heard.

I AGREE : 11/18/2009
I agree 100%. Any child born here regardless of the nationality of the parents ARE Barbadians.
Like you said it is probably a ploy to get illegal immigrants out of Barbados BUT how can we deny a child its nationality because of parents illegal status.

Miche
