WI rains on England parade

The West Indies cricket team and the weather combined to rain on England's parade this morning at Kensington Oval in the Third One Day International between the two teams.

Rain forced a delay of the start of the match, which began an hour and a half later than its scheduled 9:30 AM start (Eastern Caribbean time) and was reduced to 44 overs a side.

That was actually the good news for the English cricket team, for when the match began, they collapsed in spectacular fashion and were eventually shot out for a modest 117 in 41.2 overs.

The visitors struggled to come to terms on a lively pitch and West Indies’ bowlers were superb in consistently maintaining the pressure.

Fidel Edwards, who finished with three for 28, started the ball rolling, despatching Andrew Strauss and Ravi Bopara in his fourth over.

At the opposite end, Lionel Baker kept things tight by sending down nine successive overs that cost only 21 runs.

Dwayne Bravo, always one to make things happen, struck with his first ball and picked up four for 19.

England were in tatters at 68 for eight, but a ninth wicket partnership of 48 between Dimitri Mascarenhas (36) and Gareth Batty (17) prevented a complete embarrassment and took the tourists past the 100-run mark. (HG)
