A gun dealer charged with not only failing to register his transactions but with possession of 21 guns – some of them high-powered weapons – without the proper licences was remanded after a late afternoon court appearance yesterday.
Michael Holder, 43, of Christ Church, had 25 charges, including 21 charges of possession of illegal firearms, read to him by Magistrate Graveney Bannister. Holder appeared in the District “A” Magistrates’ Court.
The president of the Barbados Rifle Association is accused, in District B’s jurisdiction, that, being the holder of a firearm dealer’s licence, he failed to forward to the Commissioner of Police, before January 15, a true record of the extract of the register of all transactions and that, being the holder of a firearm dealer’s licence, he failed to make an entry in the register immediately after the transaction took place, all on January 30.
He is also accused that, being the holder of a firearm dealer’s licence, he kept 21 firearms at a place other than a location specified by the Commissioner of Police on January 31.

Comment LinkNow we have an idea how corrupt and where guns illegally are coming into this country. Had it not for this find these firearms would have found themselves on the streets of this country. I hope he will never be able to get another license of firearms in this country and a few years up in the East. We have at the moment such an increase of gun violence and someone of trust in such a position, then failing to acquire the right documents for his black market collection for resale have left me speechless. I think an appeal once more for all those who still are carrying illegal firearms to bring them in or find themselves with serious consequences with the law; enough is enough, how many more must die…...

Comment LinkExcellent work by the RBPF. Somehow these guns and ammo are filtering into the hands of the young and restless. We all see what happens then.

Comment LinkI have to commend the Commissioner and members of the RBPF on this. Keep at it without fear or favour, especially for those respected deceivers - people who really should know better. I once heard a Magistrate state that she would not be granting bail to anyone appearing before her on gun or ammunition charges, but then they all appeal to the High Court. Now in these troubling times, let us see the ilk of which the High Court is made.

Comment LinkHow many gun dealers are there in Barbados and why does such a small country need more than (say)two?

Comment LinkWell, while it might be easy to jump to conclusions from just reading the news and looking on the surface, dare I say that there is always more than meets the eye and I’m sure this matter is far from black and white so while some commenters will be quick to jump on the bandwagon and blame this one small man for the increase in gun crime and say, “Aha, ‘Now we have an idea how corrupt and where guns illegally are coming into this country’,” ask yourselves whether there could be more to this matter than the general public is and will ever be aware of!
