$25 000 ganja lesson for teacher
Alison Vaughn Gale: charged with possession of cannabis.
Thu, July 29, 2010 - 12:00 AM
A TEACHER who was growing marijuana in her front yard will have to fork out $25 000 to avoid a 12-month stay at HMP Dodds.
Alison Vaughn Gale, 54, of Graeme Hall Terrace, Christ Church, appeared in the Oistins Magistrates’ Court yesterday, where she was charged with possession of cannabis, having a traffickable quantity of the drug, possession with intent to supply, and cultivation of the plants on Tuesday.
Acting Magistrate Alliston Seale convicted, reprimanded and discharged her for drug trafficking and withdrew the charge of possession with intent to supply.
The Acting Magistrate, however, fined her $10 000 in six months for simple possession, in addition to $15 000, also in six months for growing the illegal substance.
If Gale does not pay the fines, she will spend 12 months in prison.
The court heard that lawmen from the Drug Squad executed a search warrant at Gale’s home and found 11 plants growing in her front yard. They also found a loose quantity of ganja in the house.

Am i reading this story correctly? You mean to tell me this person had that much cannabis in they possession and was only hit with a fine? If it was me, remand for six years, then jail after for another six. What kind of justice Barbados have going on?

Comment LinkIt is amazing that this paper can get hold of what looks to me like a RBPF photograph.
This lady knows better but seems to be bold. On the other hand I hope the boys on the block found guilty of a similar crime will be fined and discharged. Fair is Fair.

Comment Linkwow! I am amazed, no mentioning of where this teacher teaches. Not only it is evident that she grows it but there was a loose quantity found, charged with traffickable amount with intent to sell and that is all she gets? What if she was selling to your child? Come on Barbados, if that was a black sister, a rastafarian or any other who has previous drug charges we all know they would have received time in jail and a greater fine. How is this?

Comment Linkshe should have been sentenced to 6 months in jail for this. How do you think it looks to her students now that she has been charged with a crime. She was supposed to be their role model. It makes you wonder now if she was also supplying her charges with any of this drug. that fine was a slap on the wrist for her.

Comment LinkIf this was a black bajan, they would not have been given the option to pay a fine, they would have automatically been given a prison sentence. This woman should be sent to prison for growing and possessing illegal drugs..

Comment LinkIt is time that Ganja be legalized in Barbados. It is time that there is a real debate on this issue, and it must be done immediately. For too long we have been burying our heads in the sand on this matter. It is time that we place it on a referendum and let the people of Barbados decide, since the politicians are hiding like little children, under the skirts of their mothers.
We continue to overburden our police, judiciary and prison system with the senseless incarceration of ganja smokers. People are sent to prison for a ganja roach, pure stupidity on the part of our institutions.
Let us have a referendum on this matter of legalization now.

Comment LinkFirst, Mr Seale, congratulations on your elevation, even if it is temporary. Taking all these factors into account-cultivating in the front yard (not obscured from vision), trafficking, a stash in the house, and her her occupation, I think this fine should have been forthwith. In addition, like our little people with spliffs, she should have savoured the ambience of our palace in the east In other jurisdictions, her job would already have been a thing of the past. No good example for her/our students. I hope they were not in anyway the beneficiaries of these treats.

Comment LinkWell, well, well, a TEACHER who should be setting an example. I really hope that she never used to be high in school beating up on the children.
Imagine this woman growing those marijuana plants in her front yard and still have a “loose” quantity in her house.
One thing I must say though, is that Ms. Gale is one brave woman.

Comment LinkFor all of you who are accusing this woman. How do you know it was her who was growing these drugs? There are lots of explanations for her taking the blame for this. Don’t make assumptions until you know the facts.

Comment LinkWow, this is truly amazing she has her thing going on, but what about our children for crying out loud, she is a teacher our children are supposed to be in her care six hours a day five days a week. She needs to be in jail. She is a total disgrace to our children and community on the whole
